A topic of focus this year at the GMHC is Human Trafficking, and the question that many of us will find ourselves asking is ‘how does this happen and what do I do about it as a health provider?’ Early childhood trauma is one of the leading epidemics that our world currently faces. Adverse childhood experiences affect 34.8 million children in our nation alone and are directly correlated to increased risk for health, behavioral, and learning problems. In this breakout session you will walk away with an understanding of how the brain's neurodeveopment changes under chronically stressful conditions, and what you, as a health care provider or mere individual in a child's life, can do about it.
Objectives
1. Be able to discuss the correlation between between Adverse Childhood Experiences and disease, disability, and social problems as seen in the CDC's ACE Study.
2. Be able to explain the impact trauma has on a child's neurodevelopment and the difficulties that can result in classroom, home, and social settings.
3. Construct a plan of how you can immediately implement strategies in your practice to help prevent the continuation of these horrific statistics and bring healing to those already affected.
