Approaching Fever in the Tropics

Discerning the cause and best approach to a patient's fever in a tropical, low-resource setting is a daunting challenge. In this interactive session, we will use a case-based approach to review an appropriate differential diagnosis for undifferentiated fever, how to narrow the diagnosis through history, physical, and tests, and how to safely manage the febrile patient. The 3 most important tests to order and the 3 most important antimicrobials to consider will be reviewed. Because it is tightly related, approach to fever in the returning traveler will also be addressed, though not comprehensively.
Objectives
1. Organize and prioritize a differential diagnosis for fever in the tropics
2. Describe an effective approach to diagnosing the patient with an undifferentiated fever in low resource settings
3. Describe and contrast the cause, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of important, common, or unique causes of fever in the tropics, including Malaria, Dengue, Typhoid, Leptospirosis, and Schistosomiasis
